Irish historian, researcher and Maine author, Matthew Jude Barker will join us for our March Lunch and Learn. Barker, author of The Irish of Portland, Maine: A History of Forest City Hibernians will explain how the Irish influenced Portland from its early days through the twentieth century, as well as share stories of the triumphs and challenges they faced. Copies of his book will be available for sale and signing. Bring a lunch if you wish; light refreshments will be provided.

Lisa Roderick has been oil painting since 2009, and won 3rd prize in the 37th Annual Ogunquit Sidewalk Art Show after painting for only two months. She is a member of the Maine Women in the Arts Association.

With some EL Wire (or electroluminescent wire if you’re feeling fancy) and some imagination, you can transform almost any object into a glow-tastic creation. EL Wire is a thin copper wire that’s been coated in a luminescent substance that glows when alternating current it applied to it. It can be used on clothes, toys, and even bicycles! Come learn how to solder wire and make the library’s bike glow in this final program of our Teen Tech Week series. Registration is required for this program, and is for grades 5 and up. New England author, Suzanne Strempek-Shea and Ireland born, Mags Riordan join us to share the heart-wrenching story behind their book, This is Paradise: An Irish mother's grief, an African village's plight, and the medical clinic that brought fresh hope to both. Mags Riordan lost three children to tragedy, but rather than giving up on life she went to a community in Africa that needed a medical clinic and founded one as a way to give help and save others. In celebration of National Poetry Month, come hear Wesley McNair tell us what it is like to be Maine’s Poet Laureate and hear him read some of his poetry. Wes McNair is a writer, editor, and professor. He has authored ten volumes of poetry, most recently, The Lost Child: Ozark Poems. He has also written three books of prose, including a memoir, The Words I Chose: A Memoir of Family and Poetry. In addition, he has also edited several anthologies of Maine writing, and served as a guest editor in poetry of the 2010 Pushcart Prize Annual. Copies of Mr. McNair’s books will be available for sale and signing. You may bring a lunch if you wish, and we will provide light refreshments.

The Importance of Telling Your Story

Thatcher Freund, journalist and memoir writer, will talk about the importance of stories in our lives both to ourselves and to the culture we live in and why it matters so much that we preserve them. Thatcher Freund is a graduate of Stanford University with a B.A. in History, and the Columbia School of Journalism, and has lived in New England off and on for the last twenty years. He is the author of Objects of Desire: The Lives of Antiques and Those Who Pursue Them, which follow the lives of three pieces of American furniture from their creation in the 18th Century to their sales at Sotheby’s some 250 years later. Besides his speaking engagements, Thatcher helps people to write their own memoirs and teaches workshops on memoir writing. Come get inspired to write your story!

Lawyers in Libraries with Attorney Hesper Schleiderer-Hardy

Contending with legal issues can be scary, frustrating and expensive. May 1st has been deemed Maine Law Day, and on that day libraries across Maine, including the Wells Public Library, will partner with local lawyers to share information about how to access civil legal resources. 

Attendees will have an opportunity to meet a lawyer in their community and receive information about free and low-cost legal assistance. There will be an opportunity to have a brief consultation with an attorney at no cost. Wells Public Library is pleased to have partnered with local lawyer, Hesper Schleiderer-Hardy, for Maine Law Day. Lyme Disease is one of the fastest-growing infectious diseases in the United States. Fortunately, with some precautions, we can reduce our risk of contracting Lyme Disease. Bob Maurais, co-owner of Mainely Ticks, will tell us about this growing health concern and then teach us how we can protect ourselves, our family, pets and yard from ticks that carry Lyme Disease. Bob worked as an Industrial Arts/Technology Education teacher for 31 years. In 1996, Bob was honored to represent all Maine teachers as "Maine Teacher of the Year."

Kevin Gardener, author of The Granite Kiss: Traditions and Techniques of Building New England Stone Walls, has been a stone wall builder for nearly 40 years. Come learn about the history and craft of constructing rock walls from a man whose family business is widely known for traditional New England stonework, particularly for historic restoration of antique structures. In addition to The Granite Kiss,Gardener has published an examination of several historic sites in the Monadnock NH Region in the 2006 anthology Where The Mountain Stands Alone.Come watch as Kevin constructs a miniature stone wall while telling us why the stone wall is here to stay!
